Senegal – Lions of Teranga

World Cup Appearances: 2002, 2018, 2022, and 2026

Highest Finish: Quarter-finals 2002

Few celebrations captured Senegal’s defiant spirit quite like the images that followed the Africa Cup of Nations trophy dispute. After Senegal challenged the decision that stripped them of their title, national team coach Pape Thiaw staged a symbolic gesture by bringing the AFCON trophy into a lion enclosure. The message was unmistakable: if you want the trophy, come get it.

The symbolism extended beyond the lion’s den. Reports and images of military personnel protecting the trophy. For many Senegalese supporters, it had become a matter of resistance against an unjust ruling.

Part protest, part performance, the spectacle transformed the trophy into a powerful symbol. In their eyes, they were still champions, and the message was clear, the trophy would remain under protection until justice was served.
