Panama – Los Canaleros

World Cup Appearances: 2018 and 2026

Highest Finish: Group stage

The history of Panamanian football is a story of perseverance and belief. For decades, Panama competed in the shadow of regional powers, repeatedly falling short of World Cup qualification despite a growing passion for the game. Gradually, the national team emerged as a force in CONCACAF, reaching multiple Gold Cup finals and earning a reputation for resilience and determination.

The defining moment came on October 10, 2017, when captain Román Torres scored a dramatic late goal against Costa Rica, securing Panama’s first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance. The achievement sparked nationwide celebrations and even prompted the declaration of a national holiday.

Panama made its World Cup debut in 2018 and later returned in 2026, marking a new era for the country’s football culture.
