Egypt – The Pharaohs

World Cup Appearances: 1934, 1990, 2018, and 2026

Highest Finish: Round of 16 in 2026

When the inaugural FIFA World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930, Egypt was poised to make history as the tournament’s only African participant. Unlike modern World Cups, there was no qualification process; nations were invited directly, and Egypt accepted the opportunity to represent both Africa and the Arab world on football’s biggest new stage.

But the team never arrived. As Egypt traveled to Europe to join the ship carrying several national teams to South America, severe weather delayed their journey. By the time they reached the port in France, their ship to had already departed. With no practical way to reach Uruguay before the tournament began, Egypt was forced to withdraw.

The missed voyage became one of football’s great “what if” stories. Four years later, Egypt finally reached the World Cup in 1934, becoming the first African nation to compete in the tournament.
