In the early 2000s, Côte d’Ivoire was divided by a brutal civil war that split the country along political, regional, and religious lines. Amid the conflict, the national football team became a rare symbol of unity, bringing together players from every part of the nation.
The defining moment came in 2005 when Côte d’Ivoire qualified for its first FIFA World Cup. In an emotional post-match address, team captain Didier Drogba knelt before television cameras and pleaded with his fellow Ivorians to lay down their weapons and seek reconciliation.
Two years later, the national team played a match in the rebel-held city of Bouaké, a powerful gesture of national unity.
While football alone did not end the conflict, the national team demonstrated how sport can transcend divisions, inspire dialogue, and offer a shared vision of peace.
