As co-hosts of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, South Korea produced one of the tournament’s most memorable Cinderella stories. Entering the competition without ever winning a World Cup match, the team energized a nation by defeating Poland and Portugal before advancing to the knockout stage. Under Dutch coach Guus Hiddink, South Korea then shocked the football world by eliminating Italy and Spain, becoming the first Asian nation to reach a World Cup semifinal.
Yet the achievement remains intertwined with controversy. Both Italy and Spain strongly disputed key refereeing decisions during their defeats, sparking debates that continue to this day.
Despite the controversy, South Korea’s run transformed perceptions of Asian football. Backed by passionate crowds, the team inspired millions and proved that established football powers could be challenged.
